The first step to becoming a surveyor is to get a degree. Accredited college programs in Surveying or Geomatics are available throughout the country. Colleges and Technical Schools offer two-year and four-year degree programs.

After completing an education, you take the Fundamentals exam. Successfully passing this exam allows potential employers know that the candidate has achieved a recognized standard.
The next step requires work experience under the supervision of a licensed surveyor. After attaining the required experience, you take a national exam and a state-specific exam to obtain a license for the State in which you will work.
The field of Land Surveying deals with primarily the retracement of land boundaries. The education obtained to become a land surveyor can lead to other exciting careers in remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GPS), photogrammetry and related forms of earth mapping.
