Action Alert from NSPS

and the

Coalition to Save Our GPS: letters requested by 3-16-12

2/29/12 Update:  The FCC extended the comment period deadline, previously March 1, to March 16.  On February 15, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a Public Notice proposing that it:
1) Withdraw the January 2011 waiver that allowed LightSquared to proceed with its planned wireless network; and
2) Modify LightSquared’s satellite license to prohibit LightSquared from building any ground-based wireless network.

This FCC decision was brought about, in large part, by two additional interference studies released by the Federal government on February 14.  These reports (http://www.gps.gov/news/2012/02/lightsquared/)demonstrate that LightSquared’s network interferes with GPS and that there are no practical fixes to solve that interference.

County Officials Offer Engineers' Report:  Somber News about Transportation Infrastructure The nation’s roads and bridges are in desperate need of federal assistance for long-delayed maintenance and repair work which would help create jobs, according to a new NACo survey of county engineers and sent to NSPS. The National Association of Counties (NACo) has released a fairly somber report on transportation infrastructure conditions from 1,300 county engineers. While the results should not surprise people who know how road and bridge funding has waned in recent years, except for a short burst of stimulus funding, the findings are still eye-catching. Fully 81%  of the engineers say they've deferred maintenance spending since the economy began to slow, about five years ago. Nearly all of them have roads in poor or fair condition, more than half had suffered funding cuts of 10-25%  since 2008, and 86% have poor-condition bridges.
