Unwritten Registry Regulations?

Give MALSCE Your Input  by December 14, 2012

MALSCE has heard that some of the Massachusetts Registries of Deeds may have 'unwritten' rules or requirements for plans.  Before the Board develops a strategy, we need your input about your experience with different Registries of Deeds.

Provide your input in this survey by December 14, 2012:

Hurricane Sandy Relief Effort Organized by NSPS Foundation Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast with a vengeance.
The NSPS Foundation stands ready to provide disaster relief funds to surveyors and their employees who have been affected by the storm. With such devastation from the storm, the Foundation is concerned that their current funds will be depleted in such a short period of time that they won’t be able to assist many who need help. The Foundation is making an urgent appeal for you to give a generous tax-deductible contribution to keep this fund liquid.

Donations are also now being matched.  More Information:  http://www.malsce.org/index.cfm?cdid=10929&pid=10386

FEMA Launches New Way To Submit Request To Change Property Zone Designation:   FEMA is launching a new way to submit a request to change a property’s flood zone designation – with the Online Letter of Map Change (LOMC)!  If a property owner believes his/her property has been inadvertently included in a Special Flood Hazard Area, the property owner may now request a change on the web, instead of by mail. Applicants can use this new website instead of the MT-1 or MT-EZ paper forms.  Professional surveyors, engineers, property owners, or their designated representatives, can use this online tool to conveniently submit required documents, property information, and payment information all in one place.
This app will allow land surveyors to better meet clients' needs. Benefits include:
 - Applicants may save information online and finish applying at their convenience
 -  Clear and intuitive interface makes applying user-friendly
 -  Eliminates time associated with the paper-based submission
 -  Frequent applicants can manage multiple LOMC requests online
 -  More efficient communications with LOMC processing staff
 -  Applicants can check their application status in real-time

FIG seeks Young Surveyors

In the Western World, the average age of a surveyor is quite high, e. g. USA 57 years, according to the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG). It is about the same in large parts of Europe. This is a great problem as there are not enough new surveyors to fill up the gap that will come out of the upcoming retirements. Can something be done about this, and what can be done?  FIG has initiated a Young Surveyors Network and welcomes participation from MALSCE members.

FIG and the National Society of Professional Surveyors asked us to let MALSCE members know about this group. More information:  http://www.fig.net/ys/

MassDOT Continues  Statewide Transportation Conversation - public hearings in December 2012

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will hold a series of statewide discussions to generate ideas and help prioritize agency transportation initiatives now and in the future.

State Jobs Commission Releases Report

On October 3, 2012, the state's Jobs Commission released their report on how the Commonwealth can best mitigate barriers to job creation, leverage the strengths of the state economy, and better align the needs of employers with the available workforce.

To create jobs, the Commission outlined a number of tactics, including:

 - Continuing reforms to lower business costs and regulatory burdens;
 - Creating a preference in government purchasing for MA based goods;
 - Addressing regional disparities to employment by targeting incentives and economic development efforts to address regional needs;
 - Investing in the construction and maintenance of public infrastructure;
 - Conducting a job vacancy survey annually to provide data to education and workforce training institutions;
 - Creating a supported internship program for unemployed job seekers;
 - Addressing potential barriers to employment among job seekers experiencing bias related to age, disability, court activity records, or military experience;
 - Recapitalizing the Workforce Competitiveness Trust Fund;
 - Increasing collaborations among business, education, and workforce agencies to ensure alignment between programs, jobs, and employers.
