Objectives: This seminar will be a broad overview of the boundary surveying process with a focus on the role of and methods of records research. This seminar is intended for technicians who do not make boundary decisions on a regular basis but need an understanding of basic research in order to better perform their current duties. This seminar is especially designed for surveying field personnel, CAD technicians, or engineering technicians who interface with land surveyors on a regular basis. This seminar is also a ?must see? for anyone who is contemplating moving his or her career from the surveying technician to the professional level and wishes to explore what that entails. Topics to be discussed will include: The rationale for research, research standards in Massachusetts, land ownership concepts, boundary law basics, research sources and special boundary research problems (e.g. adverse possession, ancient ways, etc). This seminar will be a whirlwind tour of the boundary research process and will include a discussion of those resources available for further study and some different sources of boundary law information.
Who should attend: This seminar is intended for the land surveying technician, and will be most beneficial to those individuals who are seeking a broad introduction to the many facets of land surveying research. This seminar may also be beneficial to individuals currently studying to take their SIT exam. Though a few Professional Land Surveyors may be interested in a refresher on the basics of research, this seminar is not designed for the practicing land surveyor, but rather for his or her non-registered technical staff.
Seminar Speaker: Mr. Vannozzi is an Assistant Professor of Civil Technology/Surveying & Mapping at the Thompson School of Applied Science at the University of New Hampshire. He is a graduate of the University of Maine where he earned a BS in Forestry with High Honors with concentrations in both Forest Management and Surveying in 1984 and an MS in Forestry (with a surveying emphasis) in 2006. He is also a doctoral candidate in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment (NRE) at the University of Connecticut. His research is focused on GIS Applications and Education for Land Surveyors. He is registered as a Professional Land Surveyor in Massachusetts. He is a Past-President and active member of MALSCE where he serves on the Professional Development Committee and represents MALSCE on the NSPS Board of Governors. He was named MALSCE's Surveyor of the Year in 1998.
Before reorienting his career to focus on surveying education in 2003, Mr. Vannozzi worked in private practice for 19 years specializing in ancient boundary retracement, boundary dispute resolution and title, boundary and zoning litigation. From 2002 through 2009, Mr. Vannozzi taught courses in surveying measurement, legal aspects of land surveying, CAD, adjustment computations and surveying technology at the Wentworth Institute of Technology (2002-2007) and the University of Connecticut (2007-2009).
MALSCE thanks Rich Vannozzi for presenting this seminar
